Online Orientation
Standardized online general orientation - In examining the process used for orienting students to prepare for clinical education in healthcare facilities, we found that clinical facilities were requiring students to complete the routine general orientation content that all healthcare employees must review each year. But - instead of a yearly review - students were being required to review this content at each facility they were assigned to each semester. This resulted in redundant content for the student; but more importantly, less actual clinical time at the bedside! Several approaches were used:
- the facility educator presented the content to each group of students,
- the facility educator oriented the faculty and the faculty then oriented each group of students,
- the facility provided an orientation packet or CD that students and faculty must complete
- the facility contracted with a third party organization to present the content via either online or CD delivery models
Each of these approaches had their benefits and their pitfalls. Most of the time, students were still required to receive duplicative education for each clinical facility.
TCPS℠ has developed a common curriculum that is applicable across a variety of healthcare facilities. This content is reviewed yearly for continued applicability and updated as needed to reflect changes in the healthcare environment and regulatory changes - such as the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals.

Students and Faculty are only be required to complete the general orientation content once per academic year and the facility/unit-specific content as it applies to the clinical assignment. To support a variety of online learning preferences, content is presented as flash movies with audio and video, and as a script handout.

Seeking to create a "best practice" with the Online Orientation concept, nursing students are also presented with scenarios where they must apply the content in patient care delivery situations. This approach strengthens the content by promoting critical thinking and decision-making by the student. The design of this content application is through branching decision tree style of content presentation that offers students with the opportunity to select a learning pathway based upon their perceived knowledge base allowing them to review actual course content or proceed to simulated healthcare situations where they must apply their knowledge of the content. This design allows students who have experience with the content to spend less time in the course and still validate their understanding of the content. Two versions of the simulations are rotated yearly to provide students with new situations during the typical two year clinical rotation period. NOTE: Not all navigation links will work in the demo!

Once all materials have been reviewed, students complete the General Orientation component, by taking an online quiz. This quiz consists of a 25 randomized question/answer quiz that is pulled from a 100 item question pool. A minimum passing score of 92% is required to complete this component successfully.

While completion data for online quizzes may be tracked via the learning management system, partners also have access to a standardized paper document that can be used to track individual student clinical orientation and participation requirements. This downloadable document is available to any partner who chooses to use it as a student clinical passport in a format that may be carried with the student to each clinical experience.

Facility Specific Orientation Needs ...
In addition to the General Orientation content, facilities may contract with the TCPS℠ team to also provide facility specific online orientation either through the development of this content for the facility or by linking to existing content that customizes the general content - such as emergency codes, specific National Patient Safety Goal-related initiatives, organizational mission and values, documentation policies and procedures, etc. Facilities may elect to use an online quiz that can monitor student completion via an online learning management system. Students may also download any required documents or forms (such as confidentiality forms) that a facility requires related to the student clinical placement process.
